Chapter Six

Brenda continued her walk after leaving Roland. She spotted Brody Duval. He came from the direction of the Sheffield Bed and Breakfast guest parking lot. Clara wasn’t with him. Brenda walked toward him and asked how the family reunion was going.

“I had to get away from it all. I’ve been around town for the last hour. The sports antiques shop is a fascinating place. The owner told me how he came to possess so many famous mementos. I had no idea of the history of gun manufacture in this area. Of course, I should have since this is around the area where the colonies first fought for freedom. To think, so many antique guns still exist and can be found right here in this seaside town. I’m going to find Roland and tell him about it. He’s interested in historical things.”

“Did you spend most of your time in the Old and New shop?”

“I walked some frustration away first until I spotted it,” he chuckled. “I was fascinated. It was a place hard to leave.”

“I don’t suppose you visited Sweet Treats Bakery on your way, did you? If not, you should visit before you leave town.”

“I wasn’t hungry. The reunion barbecue left me stuffed!” He glanced at his watch. “I told Clara I would pick her up in a half hour. She should be finished with family photos by then.”

Brenda had proof Brody Duval spent his time blowing off steam by walking around before getting to the sporting goods shop. He stated he had been alone. The man who ran the sports antiques shop was surely at home and in bed at this hour and would not be able to be questioned until the morning. She tried to come up with any reason why a man like Brody would hold a grudge against Hope and Allie. She came up empty-handed.

Brenda turned to a voice calling her name. Joel Fletcher appeared breathless when he approached her.

“Have you seen Nadia, Brenda? I’ve been looking for her all afternoon. When she didn’t show up for dinner, I have to say I was miffed. On the other hand, I’m sure she had a good reason…”

“She can’t be far. I spoke to her a few minutes ago but didn’t notice which way she went. Oh, I keep meaning to ask you. What do you do for a living, Joel?” Brenda said.

“I’m an architect. I’m establishing my name in designing state-of-the-art office buildings.”

“I’m sure you are very good at that. You seem like a pretty stylish guy, and that must carry over in your work.”

Joel scuffed his shoe in the grass and looked down, momentarily embarrassed by the compliment. His gesture gave Brenda the chance to inspect his clothing and hands. “I’m not sure how good I am, but it’s the challenge I love. I’m hoping with Nadia at my side, I’ll gain more confidence.”

Brenda surmised he was in his late thirties. She was surprised he was still trying to grasp for self-assurance at his age.
